Amalia was born in New York to a Jewish family. Her neighbors, devout Tibetan Buddhists, often hosted visiting Lamas, thereby introducing her to aspects of Tibetan culture. At the age of 18, Amalia began to study Tibetan at the University of Virginia Summer Language Institute. It was also there that she began to teach herself dranyen, and that same year also taught herself mandolin. It was soon after that she composed the music for her first solo Tibetan pop album, Leaving Home. It was also this year that she was awarded the Tibetan Music Award for Best International Artiste.
Travelling to Tibet for the first time in 2007, she had the unique opportunity to perform with several famous Tibetan singers in Lhoka, Nagchu and Ngawa as well as Beijing. This experience encouraged her to not only continue writing music, but also to start writing lyrics. Since that time she has performed in Chengdu, Xining, Lhagang and Jyekundo (Yushu), published numerous collaborative albums with Tibetan artists, and continues to write music and lyrics for several Tibetan singers, arrangers and producers. Amalia's time in Tibet has served as a great inspiration in her music and work. In 2010, an earthquake struck the Yushu region killing thousands of people including dear friends. Since that time, Amalia has made it her goal to try and benefit the people of Yushu and surrounding regions through her studies, work and music. She also works to provide educational resources to encourage Tibetan literacy world-wide. |
